What Apple Actually Shipped

The new Siri is more than a voice shortcut. Apple describes it as a ground-up rebuild around four practical capabilities.

Personal context. Siri can search across Messages, Mail, Photos, and Notes. A request such as ‘find that restaurant recommendation from last week’ is meant to work without the user remembering which app contained the answer.

On-screen awareness. Siri can understand the document, image, or selection currently open on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. That makes tasks such as saving a recipe to Notes or extracting information from a file feel like system actions rather than copy-and-paste exercises.

Visual intelligence. The camera can identify objects, extract data from receipts, and turn information from posters into calendar events. The same general direction is coming to Mac and iPad.

Natural conversation. Siri now supports follow-up questions and richer responses instead of treating every request as an isolated command. Apple is also building a dedicated Siri experience with conversation history shared across devices.

Siri AI Versus ChatGPT and Claude

The important distinction is where the assistant gets its context. ChatGPT and Claude begin with broad model knowledge and the files or links a user chooses to provide. Siri's advantage is knowing what is already happening on the user's devices.

That does not make Siri the strongest model in every category. ChatGPT remains the more flexible generalist for brainstorming, image generation, data analysis, and cross-platform work. Claude is particularly strong for long documents, professional writing, and explanations that benefit from cautious reasoning.

The Extensions Question

Apple is also reported to be working on an Extensions system that would let Siri hand demanding tasks to providers such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. That would create a useful division of labor: Siri handles device operations and personal context, while a selected external model handles deep research or generation.

There is an important caveat: Extensions were not demonstrated at WWDC, were not described in Apple's public announcement, and were not part of the public beta described in the original reporting. Treat this as a direction to watch, not a feature that is already available everywhere.

Who Should Use What

Choose Siri AI if:

• You spend most of your day in the Apple ecosystem.
• You want an assistant that can act on messages, files, and device state.
• Privacy and on-device processing matter more than model breadth.
• You prefer quick, hands-free actions.

Choose ChatGPT if:

• You want one flexible assistant for writing, brainstorming, images, and analysis.
• You work across several platforms.
• You value a mature voice and multimodal workflow.

Choose Claude if:

• You work with long documents or demanding professional writing.
• You want careful reasoning and strong coding explanations.
• You prefer a more restrained, nuanced writing style.

The Privacy Trade-off

Siri's strongest strategic advantage is privacy. Apple says supported tasks run on-device where possible and use Private Cloud Compute when more capacity is needed. ChatGPT and Claude, by contrast, route requests through their own services. For sensitive personal or business information, that difference is material, even when the external models are more capable.

The Real Story

Apple is not trying to win by making Siri the best standalone chatbot. It is betting that an assistant with deep access to the operating system is more useful than a powerful model that remains disconnected from the user's daily context.

The winner will depend on priorities: integration and privacy point to Siri; breadth and creativity point to ChatGPT; depth and long-context work point to Claude.
